G’day Swivelheads!

The Bald Faced Stag proved to be a nice room. Tight for wing space on stage, but as a space to bring our production into? Nice!

Peter, the house production guy was a champion. He repaired Melissa’s foot-switch during sound-check. Tearing into it like a real pro, saving us a huge headache. Many thanks.

Crick, our newest crew member, made his debut as well. Taking video off all our hands. He’s added some very nice additions to Cameron’s artwork. Adding some annimated bits to the sureal stills. He and I will be working on the show intros together from here on out. Set the “Ode To Hicks” to videos. Again we grow. Take it up another notch.

The turn out was not what we had hoped. Not compared to our pulls at The Sando recently. Was it the week before Easter? Was it the location? Not a walk up location like the Sando. Oh and Earth Hour was on. FuckNose. Maybe it was a little of everything. Those who were there had a ball. The Stag is a good room, with good P.A. and a decent stage. Friendly owner and managers. I hope it can get a rep and become a solid draw. I have it on good sources we had 7-10 times as many payers as Casey Donovan had a few nights before. So we out drew an Idol. Good Shit!!!!!

The Band Kicked Ass! The best performance since I’ve been with the organization. Hands down. There had been heaps of work on details recently. It showed. Melissa was on fire! Playing with such intensity she broke multiple strings, continuing to sing as her guitar tech Peter Holz straps a new ax on her. Pete earned his money.

Tony had a new guitar. A nice Ibanez with a floating trem. Adding another dimension to his extraordinary pallate. Tony and Clinton were tearing it up. I love to watch musos really fuckin play! Chris Long told me afterward, he may not have ever seen Clinton play that explosive before. And he’s seen a few. So it ain’t just me.

My family came. That was cool. I had to laugh. My proper English In-Laws coming straight from some posh Flameco gig, to the Pub Rock gig. My Niece, a rock goddess in her own right, was amazed at our Melissa.

And lastly, the video:

The first of the “FoxCam” series. Taken on my Android phone on stage from my operating position. I have replaced the audio with Clinton’s monitor mix. Shot standing on a milk crate, tucked behind the P.A. stack. Like I said, tight fit. The video goes a bit out of sync as it goes. Not sure why. I’ll work on it.

Thanks to Wormholes Exist, Still Bandits, and Black Acid Flashbacks, for joining us again. Kat was great coming back so soon after tonsil surgery to put on a great show. B.A.F. were great fun as expected. Way to dry fuck that Marshall mate! Rocked it like it was Budokan!

This guy is never idle. Always creating something. You gotta dig that.

Here are a few videos of Clinton Harn laying down tracks with Heval. Just drums and guide tracks. Heval won The MusicOz award in the World Music Category in 2006. Heval includes Peter Mulas. Some of you may remember Peter playing live with Swivelhead before the band recruited Tony.

As an old drummer myself, I love to watch this guy play. So fluid. All that finesse I never had! Bwa!

Clinton posted these to his facebook page. I have added them to the Swivelhead YouTube page and included Clinton’s comments below.

Clinton Harn : Here is a preview clip from day one of recording drums with guide tracks for the new “HEVAL” album. The section is from the 24 bar 7/8 drum break in “Istanbul Pete”. I’m thrilled to be a part of this unique & fabulous project, along with some great mates.

P/S: I’m diggin Pete’s tasteful acoustic solo from 3:20 on “Departures” on myspace. Pete, you’re the greatest!!!

Clinton Harn : Howdy folks, here’s another clip upload. This song is a beautiful composition by our Soprano player Louie. It looks fairly easy but its a bitch of a tune to cut, especially at that tempo. So kids, learn how to master your slower tempos, both common and odd time signatures.

This groove is inspired by one of my all time f…avourite drummers, Gavin Harrison. This one’s for you buddy:)

We’d like to wish you all a wonderful and peaceful new year.

We could use one. The past decade has been a rough one on this pale blue dot. Wars, environmental devastation, economic hubris and collapse, we’ve seen it all. Yet with all this happening. It appears to me most of the world lives in cruise control. Being good little consumers and pretending it all has nothing to do with them.

With this in mind I give you this.

“The Pale Blue Dot”

It get’s juicy @ 1:40.

Please share. Sagan is one of my heroes.

Look again at that dot. That’s here, that’s home, that’s us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every “superstar,” every “supreme leader,” every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam. The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.

Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.

The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand.

It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we’ve ever known.

From all the Swivelhead mob. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year

Jon, Clinton, Melissa, Tony, Quinn, Don, Chris

See you all at a gig in 2010!

Hey Swivelheads!

A very pub rock experience at the Lansdowne last Thursday. Tiny stage, not enough P.A. and no sound-check. I had fingernails at the beginning of the day.

That said, it did go off. The support bands were great. I am digging Dakota Court. Good band, solid show. Thanks to No Peace for Charlie and Shape for playing. It was a good night overall.

We had a few technical issues. A term you will read on this blog again. When working with technology, sometimes it will fuck up.

Aside from four dead compressors and a severe lack of microphones in the house system. Melissa had guitar problems. It’s these moments where you see the mettle of your employer. Melissa killed it. Sang like a bird. Letting the guitar go for a song or two. Then in true rock and roll style. Melissa picks up her main guitar, rips the broken string off and plays the rest of the set on a five string. I believe it was a “D” string. Not an easy thing to riff around.

Nancy Wilson would be proud!

The Lansdowne staff were great. Thanks to all.

See you at the Sando in February.
